[9:15PM, 8/24/2018] momsy: THE MAN BEHIND TECNO  PHONE-NNAMDI EZEIGBO

Nnamdi Ezeigbo is the founder and CEO of SLOT systems limited, and also the brain behind TECNO and INFINIX, the fastest selling phone brands in Nigeria. Many people are not even aware that these popular phone brands are the brainchild of a fellow Nigerian. His success story is a very remarkable one.

Nnamdi Ezeigbo studied Electrical Electronics Engineering at the Yaba College of Technology in 1988, and got a Higher National Diploma (HND), before serving his country, Nigeria, during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year at Guinness Nigeria PLC, in 1996.

After completing his youth service year, Nnamdi Ezeigbo tried to no avail to secure a job with a company in Nigeria. With no promising signs of any potential employment, he went on to work as an apprentice learning how to repair computers. After which he launched out on his own to repair computers for individuals.  Since he didn’t have any cash at the time, he had to squat with a friend of his at Ikeja, who owned a book store. His customer base grew, largely because of his honesty and the premium he placed on customer service.

The mutual trust and good relationship with his customers, was what gave him his first break in business.  One day, an old customer he knew from his days as an apprentice, came to his little shop to see him. He told him he would love him to continue fixing his computers, but would prefer he operated from a larger and more serene environment. To help him out, the customer brought some printers for Nnamdi to sell, from which he used the proceeds to setup a new shop for himself. He paid for the store at a then price of 180,000 Naira (He later bought that same store many years later for 100 million Naira).

From his new store, he began to sell computers. As his business grew, a lot of customers started to both demand for slot stores in areas close to their vicinities, and to ask if they sold mobile phones. With a keen eye to spot opportunity when it presents itself, Nnamdi Ezeigbo immediately expanded his business to also cover the sale of mobile phones.

With no real knowledge on how to manage a growing business, Nnamdi decided to enrol for an MBA program at the prestigious Lagos Business School. He also began to attend many workshops on entrepreneurship, and that helped to sharpen his business acumen and develop his legendary entrepreneurial prowess.

During this process, he and his team decided to take a 5 year route to build a strong reputation for their brand. By the time the projection had elapsed, the Slot brand name was the most reputable mobile phone retailer in the whole country.

The rise of telecommunication networks created many opportunities in the Nigerian market. Their poor services caused many Nigerians to purchase more than one mobile phone, so they could try a different network when the other was bad. Nnamdi realised this problem early on, and approached Nokia in a bid to convince them to manufacture dual sim phones for Nigerians, so they would carry only one mobile phone at a time instead of two. They refused to listen because, seeing people carry more of their phones meant more phone sales for them.

According to his interview with Nairametrics, Nnamdi said;

*“So I went to China and got a guy who had worked with a company called Bird then. Bird was into phones but they got choked and lost market share. I met with the guy and asked the guy to let us do something. I came with that name and I registered it here and brought the guy to Nigeria. And that was the high point of our business. We came together and I designed the first Tecno phone, Tecno T101. We started it but the market did not accept it and we also had problem with the dual SIM not working together and we had to make corrections and we came with Tecno 201 and that was a bit accepted by the market. But we were basically giving marketers on credit to sell the phones and then pay us later. And I was funding it all alone.”*

*“Since I was funding it alone, we were finding it difficult to get the right quantity to sell until the market started accepting us. What I now did was to make them pay in advance, I mean the dealers. So we started using their money to order the products.  This was around 2007. The introduction of Tecno brand was the turning point of our business.”*

*“Like I said, Tecno is my baby and we kept improving. I knew a day would come when the middle class would accept Tecno. Initially, it was a phone for low income people but based on improvement and upping our game, the middle class had to accept it and when the economy went down in 2008 that helped Tecno to move to the top. Since purchasing power had dropped, they had to go for something that have same capabilities but cheaper. So with N15,000, you could buy a Smartphone and thank God for 3G network. The advent of 3G network actually helped Tecno to move up. So students who could not afford to buy phones in the range of N30,000 could buy one for N15,000 and enjoy features of Smartphone like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and so on.”*

Today, Nnamdi Ezeigbo is a phenomenal success story in Nigeria and indeed Africa. From a humble repair man, he has built a MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR company and one of the most recognizable brand in Nigeria.

There are many lessons in this story.

Pay attention to your business no matter how small it is today, it can be the seed of a global company tomorrow.

Integrity in business is extremely important, it will open doors for you, and speak for you, even when you are not present.

When you see opportunities, grab it and run with it. Nokia refused Nnamdi’s idea, Nokia was mighty and Nnamdi was nobody, but today because Nnamdi believed in his idea and grabbed the opportunity, Tecno is everywhere, and Nokia is dead. How are the mighty fallen? Run with your idea, and this too will be your story.

Keep improving your products and services every day. Nnamdi kept improving Tecno steadily until it became an accepted brand in Nigeria.

Most importantly, the greatest investment you will make is an investment in yourself. As a business man, if you can afford a business school, enroll.

Don’t waste your time crying over the economy of the nation, there is nothing you can do about it, but there is a lot you can do about yourself.

 Think positive.

*Like Nnamdi you can change your world.

By Akan Ebenezer

** Trump is my kind of stupid White Man- he doesnt mince his words. I like him because he says it the way it is. He said we should be fenced out of his country, and I agreed with him. He called us a shithole, and I agreed with him. Then he called my president "lifeless", and I am agreeing with him.
** Trump is lively, and we get entertained with his liveliness in daily tweets, his unguarded utterances, the constant stream of his faux pas, and the mistakes of his youth, middle age and old age. And I bet he would be an entertaining mess into his dotage. In my first post in support of Trump, I said the world would get to enjoy a global reality show, and he hasnt disappointed.
** We all know Buhari is "lifeless" and colourless in public, with very little charisma or oratory skills, though close associates paint a different picture of a jovial, friendly man. We knew before we voted for him that he wasnt another garrulous OBJ, a scurrilous, shell-shocked UMYA, or an insecure GEJ with the idiotic smile permanently pasted on his face, the ruddy cheeks of a lifetime drunk, and his clownish bulbous nose and red lips reminding me of Buba the pirate from some old cartoon.
** We knew Buhari was no prancing antelope. We knew he was deeply conservative, and not given to frivolities, bouts of insecure chattering, neither is he yearning for the approval and love of strangers. Its his "lifelessness" that has kept the charlatans from whispering their devious plans with him. Like someone said, the man is so lifeless he is the last person you would go to discuss dirty deals with.
** Maybe Trump expected to be entertained with an energetic monkey from Africa, the best position to take a voluptous African babe, tales of some arcane, tribal rites, and a willing specimen for the butt of his racist jokes. He has had Omarosa, then Kanye, then Kim. But in Buhari, he met a stiff neck who was just going through the diplomatic motions, just like he was, and not interested in being a good sport.
** We saw the liveliness of Macron and Trudeau and how it all ended in tarriffs and silly spats. But a dour Theresa May is doing good. Merkel keeps to herself to avoid the splatter of a roadkill. Trump sort a market for his farmers to help absorb the impact of his trade war with the Chinese, and Buhari refused to bite, him kwa has his own agenda for our farmers and the need to curb imports. If the Trump had something to offer us apart from dwindling aid and overpriced military hardware, we would have heard about it.
** Maybe Buhari should tell us what he thinks of Trump, though that would be diplomatically unwise- we are still a very junior partner in this relationship, and no need trying to punch above our weight with a bully. But we have unnamed sources too. Though engaging in a verbal spat with Trump isnt a priority.
** What is a priority is the ongoing revival of our infrastructure that my "lifeless" president has engineered at home. What is a priority is the continued resurgence of the agricultural sector and making a stab at self-sustenance. What is a priority is seeking to diversify the economy and giving it the foundation it needs to weather global and localized shocks.
** I see the changes around me, and I come alive with the hope that we can make it if we even do a half of what we are supposed. With that hope, most of us are voting for that lifelessness until 2023.
** We have allowed these guys to distract us for too long with their liveliness. OBJ made silly, funny jokes when confronted with his lapses, GEJ danced Azonto to show that all was well in Paradise, while Buhari's trek brought out the bile we harboured. We allow them to manipulate us with tribal and religious sentiments, and conspiracy theories, while they fritter our future away. We dont need lively, we need a working country.
** We elected a president, not Bugs Bunny. If Trumps wants a frenetic fool to share ribald jokes with, then Duterte remains his best bet. Too bad Zuma is no more. They say Trump is looking for chemistry that would energize him to do something for Africa, but chemistry is not what Nigeria needs. What we need is to get our shit together, and the world will come. The Chinese and other Asian countries had what investors all over the world wanted, and they went. When we have, nobody will care for rigor mortis, they will show.MY LIFELESS PRESIDO!

Nothing has changed at Ikoyi marriage registry, despite court ruling

Lagos Government gets order stopping Ikoyi Registry from holding marriages

In case you somehow missed it; the Lagos State Government announced yesterday, May 17 2018, that it has obtained a court order stopping the Ikoyi Registry from conducting marriages.

To obtain the ruling, the state government argued before the court that it is the legal right of the registries in the Local Government and Local Council Development Areas to carry out the function, and not that of a federal-government-owned registry like the one in Ikoyi.
The ruling that bars the Ikoyi registry from holding weddings is said to have taken effect on April 30, 2018 but as at today, May 19, when Pulse visited, activities at the registry were in full swing with couples getting married. You’d find it difficult to believe that any ruling had been passed against the federal establishment as activities have not even slowed down a tiny bit.
Newly married couples and excited families posed for photos, others were seated in the waiting space with eagerness in their eyes to be hitched to their sweethearts and a full house of guests were milling around the registry compound like every other business day.
Two couples we approached were absolutely, blissfully unaware that any ruling has been passed.
This is understandable, given that the ruling has just been announced yesterday, May 17, by the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, and the sensitization planned for the populace by the state government has not yet begun.
We are going to use the five divisions across the state to sensitize our people and inform them about this latest development.
“From Epe to Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja and Lagos Island. The sensitization walk which we embarked on today is also a way of creating awareness and letting the people know of this latest development,

Will anything change at the Ikoyi registry soon?

This is not the first time that Lagos state has gotten this kind of order against the Federal marriage registry.
The President of Marriage Registrars in all LGs/LCDAs in Lagos state, Deji Sokeye confirms this yesterday, March 17, that a similar judgement was indeed given by a court in 2004, but it was ignored by the Federal Government.
And if what we saw and heard at the registry today is anything to go by, it appears nothing will change even now.
One of the officials there who agreed to speak to Pulse anonymously says the state government of Lagos is just being “greedy” and that there was no way activities at the Ikoyi registry would slow down or stop until a directive is sent to them from their “ogas.”Asked if any of such directives has been sent to them as at the time of asking [few hours before this publication], her answer was an emphatic “No.”
This official obviously belongs to the group of people who believe that the state government is trying to bar the federal registry from registering marriages simply because they want all the revenues generated from weddings in the state to come into their Purse, and not to the federal government’s.

Causes of tax evasion in Nigeria and effects on the economy

Recent findings have revealed that the economy of Nigeria has not been stable, and as a result, the economy is not moving towards positive direction.Just like how well-meaning Nigerians suggested for a sort of research with a view to discourage tax evasion and avoidance, as well as boost the economy of Nigeria, I will suggest that research work should be carried out regularly for the purpose of finding out what could be the causes of the unstable Nigeria’s economy, and to also make suggestion on the possible ways of boosting the economy of Nigeria.

DEFINITION OF TAX AVOIDANCE

Tax avoidance is simply a situation, where citizens attempted to reduce part of their tax liability in such a way that it does not seems as if he or she is breaking the tax law.
Nevertheless, even though tax avoidance is contrary to the provision of the actual tax law, it has however, contributed to the law effects tax savings, as the tax payers obliged to pay at least less than what they suppose to pay in actual sense. Therefore, the act of avoiding paying of tax on the part of the Nigerian citizens is unpatriotic and anti social.

DEFINITION OF TAX EVASION

Tax evasion is another way by which, the tax payers violated the tax law.  Tax evasion is the deliberate attempt whereby, the tax payers willfully violated tax law by way of escaping their civic responsibility of tax payment.
It is a practice considered to be illegal way to deduce citizens’ tax liability. There is no gainsaying that people are reluctant, when it comes to paying tax, but the problem lies on fact that, government has not living up to their expectations, at least, by educating the general public particularly, those who are living in the rural areas, because people will not be willing to do anything, except they understand the purpose and the reason for doing so.

CAUSES OF TAX EVASION AND AVOIDANCE IN NIGERIA

Research has revealed the causes and effects of tax evasion and avoidance to the overall development of Nigeria. Going by the revelations gotten so far, many reasons have been uncovered as to what causes tax evasion and avoidance, and their effects in Nigeria.
And in this article, I am going to explain some of those causes of tax evasion and avoidance and their effects to Nigerian Nation.

1. LACK OF PATRIOTISM CAUSES TAX EVASION AND AVOIDANCE IN NIGERIA

One of the causes of tax evasion and avoidance in Nigeria is lack of patriotism. That is a situation, where the citizens exhibited unpatriotic attitudes in carrying out their civic responsibilities.

2. LACK OF BENEFITS TO BE RECEIVED BY THE CITIZENS CAUSES TAX EVASION AND AVOIDANCE

Sometimes, when the government failed in living up to its responsibility, it discouraged citizens to pay their taxes.
When the people sensed cheated by the government, such as being unsatisfied with programmes undertaken by the government, where there is no basic amenities, when the social welfareprovided is inadequate among other things, there bound to be encouragement for tax evasion and avoidance.

3. PROBLEMS OF ADMINISTRATION MACHINERY CAUSES TAX EVASION AND AVOIDANCE

Problems within the tax administration machinery is one of the causes of tax evasion and avoidance in Nigeria, such problems arises from the loopholes found in the provision of tax law, and sometimes such problems ranged from tax law, untrained man power, transportation issues and corrupt practices endulged by taxpayers.

EFFECTS OF TAX AVOIDANCE AND EVASION IN NIGERIA

I will also love to explain briefly the effects of tax evasion and avoidance in this article too, but my emphasis would be on the tax payers.
* PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL PAINS:
For tax evader, by avoiding his or her civic responsibility, that is refusing to pay tax, he or she is directly inflicting pains on himself, and such pains are psychological pains and physical pains. The reason is obvious. It is because they have failed to oblige to their civic responsibilities.
*  ENCOURAGES BRIBERY AND WASTE OF RESOURCES:
One of the effects of tax evasion and avoidance is that, it discouraged bribery, corruption and waste of resources. And this practice has affected the Nigerian economy negatively. In most cases, when a citizen being apprehended by tax collectors, he will be forced to give bribe in order to be freed by the tax agents. This is considered as waste of resources by the tax payers because he will still more than what is expected of him to pay.
* WILL MAKE TAX PAYERS TO PAY MORE:
Another effect of tax evasion and tax avoidance is that it will make the tax payers to pay more than what they suppose to pay, because the likelihood is that he or she will have to seek for the services of experts to advise them on how can avoid paying their taxes. Therefore, when a tax payer avoid to pay his or her tax, he or she does that to his or her detriment.
* HAS AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE ECONOMY:
Tax evasion and tax avoidance in a sense do have an adverse consequence on the economy, it does hampered the growth and the overall development of the economy because of the fact that, the tax evaders and the tax agents are likely to involved in bribery. Therefore, this practices on the part of the tax payers and the tax agents indeed has an adverse effect on the economy.

CONCLUSION

I will suggest that research work should be carried out regularly for the purpose of finding out what could be the causes of the unstable Nigeria’s economy, and to also make suggestion on the possible ways of boosting the economy of Nigeria.
